Unit Outline

This unit consists of a sequence of five lessons. Throughout the lesson sequence the students will understand that there are different types of shelters built around the world for different reasons. These reasons are the needs and possible wants of the community the shelter resides in, the environment the shelter resides in, and the component of sustainability. The students will analyse a house and determine whether or not it is a sustainable shelter.

Once the students have an understanding of this, they will be required to design a sustainable shelter for a previously researched location. The students finally present their design ideas to the rest of the class on which they will be getting assessed.

Lesson One

Within the first lesson the students will participate in whole class brainstorming and discussions. Initial engagment of the topic will be developed, as well as the students developing an understanding of the context.

Lesson Two

In lesson two the students are spilt into groups of three. In these groups they begin their research of a given shelter provided by the teacher. The students record their finding on a provided worksheet.

Lesson Four

In lesson four the students are ready to design their sustainable shelter. They continue to work in their small group to sequence their design steps and complete their shelter design.

Lesson Three

In the third lesson the students finish off their initial research and share their discoveries. Then the students move onto developing a deeper understanding of sustainability and how it can contribute to the design of a shelter/house.

Lesson Five

Finally, in lesson five the students share their design ideas to the whole class. The teacher evaluate the students and collects all of their design ideas for further marking.
